Creatives. Do you feel like you will NEVER be as good as “so and so”? Are you constantly comparing yourself to the insta grids, and blog posts of other amazingly talented photographers?
I am here to tell you to STOP!!
“Comparison is the thief of Joy” ~Theodore Roosevelt
When I first began my business, a few of my sweet friends allowed me to use them as guinea pigs. I devoured every photography image I could find when searching “Family Photo Shoot”. At this point I felt like a total pro. I knew exactly what I was doing right?!
I am going to show you some of my early work, so that you can see I really did start from the bottom, so you can see that no matter where you are in YOUR journey, if YOU want it YOU can have it!
That was then…This is now:
One of the quotes that I heard at the Amy & Jordan Workshop that stuck with me was: “This life is not for those chosen, but for those who choose”. Wow. Those are powerful words friends!
We have a choice! Do we choose to compare ourselves to others and never let our own creativity and voice flow? Or do we let go of those things that tie us down, do we become free to express ourselves thru this God given talent and drive, and see what we were made for?
When you let go of what others are doing, what others “expect” of you…you give yourself freedom to see what YOU can do, and focus on what you expect of yourself.
Don’t get me wrong, I definitely follow all of my favorites, and I look up to them and listen when they give a wise word. I respect their work and appreciate it greatly. I choose to place myself under some of my peers authority at times, to learn from them when they are gracious enough to teach. These are all wise and wonderful things! Much like going to school to learn how to do any type of professional career, you would follow those who came before you, learning from them and appreciating the work they have done. I consider this also very important in becoming the best in our craft, able to give our clients the best experience possible.
But we must remember they are teaching us in hopes that we will take what we learn and run with it to create NEW and improved techniques for our future generations of creatives. Not continuously do exactly what everyone else is doing. That my friends is like tracing a drawing, rather than creating your own artwork. It is not being a CREATIVE. The word itself tells us we must create. Make new things!
This week I challenge all you creatives out there, do something, or plan to do something out of your comfort zone. Create something for YOU!
This post was supposed to be about posing…that’ll have to wait, for some reason this needed to get off my chest!
